How Long Does It Really Take to Improve at Chess
“How long will it take me to get better?” This is the question I hear most from adult improvers. My honest answer: about 3 months to see real progress. But only if you work on the right things.Players Improve in Different Ways
Take two players who start at almost the same rating. After 2.5 years, one is at 2317. The other is at 2188.
Both started around 2150, and both ended up strong.
The first player grew in a steady line. The second one (that’s me) stayed in the same place for a long time, then jumped to over 2400 in about two years.
Skills often grow before your rating shows it. So don’t judge yourself too early.
Lower Ratings Move Faster
The chart above shows players at 2150 and higher, where every point is hard to get.
If your rating is around 1000, progress is usually faster. There are many easy mistakes to fix. Often, about 3 months of regular, planned work makes a clear difference.
What to Work On in the First 3 Months
- Tactics. A little every day.
- Your repertoire. Improve it. If you don’t have one, build a simple one.
- A simple thinking process. Ask what the last move threatens, and find a second candidate move.
- Your own games. Find your most common mistakes (also the strategic and endgame ones) and fix them.
These basics give the fastest progress.
Rules That Make It Work
- A few hours a week, regularly.
- Play rapid at least. Blitz alone teaches little about calculation.
- Judge your progress after 50 games, not after 10.
- Look at the trend, not at single games.
Habits Matter More Than Knowledge
You can know as much as Carlsen. Without good habits, you won’t improve.
Start with two or three:
- No next game right after a loss.
- A short warm-up before you play.
- Always look for a second candidate move.

After the First Months
When you fix the key basics, don’t forget them. They stay the basics.
But now it’s time for more complex things, like the middlegame and endgames. They build your potential in the long term.
Progress is slower here. With consistency, it still comes.
