Thanksgiving Open Analysis Day 3 | Positional Debacles

Analysis boardOver the board
This is Part 3/3 of my Thanksgiving tournament experience, played October 10-12. Each part focuses on 2 games played by me as I try to explain & communicate my play and what I could do better.

Round 5

This would be my opportunity this event to test my opening understanding against a stronger opponent, rated 2400 - as well as fight for 1st place in the event, since a draw with Black here would still keep me in sole lead on 4.5/5. We entered another Classical Sicilian, and the result is analyzed below in detail - there were numerous turns, twists, and important moments that decided the game.

Despite wanting to immediately go and relax (or jump off a bridge, either/or) after that disappointing game, there was still one more round and the fatigue was truly starting to set in. I did not want to calculate, evaluate, or play another 4-hour game, but I did need to finish with a win for a podium spot.

Round 6

I was playing my youngest opponent yet; usually not managing to beat a 12-year-old would make me reconsider playing chess again - this wasn't an exception, although this particular junior already nearly held a draw with Black against the 2400 I just lost to. I tried to play something without opening theory, but stumbled right back into the Sicilian anyways - before the game reverted again to a positional struggle.

Despite the various missteps in most of my games, I still finished 2nd with 5/6 - beating everyone I am supposed to beat and taking something away from each game. The clear pattern throughout the analysis is a lack of logical flow to my calculations, resulting in fairly mundane misses that I shouldn't be making; in addition to just a general care of attention in important moments, looking for a simple way out instead of delving into the more complex options. Whenever my next event would be, I should hopefully have some real openings from the White side by then, along with a steadier approach to each game.
