2025: A year to remember....

ChessChess personalitiesVariants
Cut to Jan 2025: I had just come back from a break and was definitely rusty. Now I stand here looking back at how much has changed since then. So, let’s start from the beginning.

LAWC 2025 (1+2):

The swiss stage went relatively uneventful considering the drama further in the tournament. I drew @Antichess_Valentino and lost to @TheUnknownGuyReborn ... both definitely very very strong players.

Then candidates came, I was in the same group as the reigning champion and a good friend @neverplayslowanti. My first game in the candidates actually rattled my confidence as I started off the candidates with barely drawing @Passionate_Player. After that I knew it was going to be tough for me to qualify for the semis because there were many strong players in the same group as mine. Fortunately, I won all my remaining matches and placed first in my group with @neverplayslowanti on my tail. Meanwhile in the other group @TheUnknownGuyReborn had completely swept the competition and ended first with @Antichess_Valentino at the second place.
The semis were set, Me vs @Antichess_Valentino and @TheUnknownGuyReborn vs @neverplayslowanti. @Antichess_Valentino was known for his very theoretical style of play which was kind of frustrating as I knew 0 opening theory. Fortunately, a friend of mine (Who? You must be wondering ... read on) helped me in opening preparation without which I definitely couldn’t have even given val a tough fight. Our initial 10 games actually ended on a draw ... 5-5. This meant that an Armageddon game was to take place. While offering times I only had one thing in mind, which was that I have to play the white pieces as my opp was definitely better with white. I ended up with white pieces and 2:45 on my clock and val at 3. The game itself was a breath taker itself. I actually blundered in the opening itself which fortunately was not punished and the game proceeded into a drawn endgame. I knew a draw would not do as black has draw odds and pushed for a win which I did eventually get after a few good manoeuvres.

In the other semi, @TheUnknownGuyReborn was once again triumphant and was my opponent in the finals. Note that he was unbeaten throughout the WHOLE tournament till now. That certainly was in my mind when I faced him. We actually ended up playing at 4 am in the morning for me. Why I don’t really know but I was up for the challenge. The final was definitely very nerve wracking but I pulled through and won with a 6.5-4.5 lead on him. https://lichess.org/game/dcnFgcrV
This was the first World Championship I won and I didn’t know how this set up the stage for more.

BAWC 2025 (0+2):

I took part in the BAWC with my alt account @Lmaoooooooooooooooo. If I remember correctly, I actually performed very poorly in the swiss stage but still managed to come second (I drew @Peeyush_Sonkar and we both won all our other games but he had the better score difference).
Our Candidates group was hell. Like straight up hell. Too many good players contending and only 2 qualifying. Poor tugr also couldn’t make the semis due to this reason. The top 3 in my candidates group were actually tied at 4 each. I beat @maxime109 who beat @neverplayslowanti who beat me, making h2h irrelevant. I fortunately had the best score difference and placed first in the group with @neverplayslowanti as second.

In the other group, @Peeyush_Sonkar dominated and stood first with @GrohochetGrom on his tail. The semifinals were me vs @grohochetgrom and @neverplayslowanti vs @peeyush_sonkar which both of us (me and @neverplayslowanti) won without much difficulties.
Now in the finals I face the reigning champion of this time control @neverplayslowanti. The odds were against me seeing that I had already lost to him in the candidates before. But somehow, I managed a comfortable win leading 16-8 and securing my second world championship. https://lichess.org/game/zft5W3mt

ACWC 2025 (2+5):

Now comes the most prestigious World Championship in Antichess out of all the others, the one actually held by Lichess itself. The time control was also one of my weakest because I get stronger as the time control gets faster so I knew that this was going to be the toughest one yet.
The competition was tough with heavy hitters like the reigning champion @pinni7, @neverplayfastanti, @theunknownguyreborn and @antichess_valentino. Two other players stood out quite vividly throughout the tournament but we’ll get to them later. Swiss stage went relatively smooth... I was playing better than I expected up until round 5 where I got absolutely crushed by @master-06. I had just beaten val in round 4 and was feeling quite good about myself (with prep of course) and then boom just like that my confidence went away in round 5. In round 6 I faced @neverplayfastanti and much to my shock and I’m pretty sure everybody’s I swept him (6-0). My secret weapon’s preparation strikes again. Again, as soon as I start feeling good about myself I just completely get cooked. In this case in round 7 I drew @milky_way12 somehow coming back from a 2-5 deficit and making it 5-5. Till here it was fine... I mean I could’ve done better but nothing disastrous happened. I ended the swiss stage at number 2 behind @master-06 who was at a perfect 7/7.

Then candidates began and things got more interesting. It couldn’t have started off in a worse way for me though. I began my candidates matches by playing with @Milky_way12 and much to my horror I lost 2-8. This was one of the most devastating losses I had throughout all tournaments. And then I just tilted and went on to play 3 more matches on the same day which I somehow did decent in. I won 2 and drew against @pinni7 though I narrowly won against @mental_suicide which wasn’t ideal. And the next day I actually played against my final opponent and won hence completing my matches. At 3.5 my chances of qualifying were looking slim. @milky_way12 played another match and won it with ease and my heart dropped as it looked like my journey was over. Then the moderators of lichess struck, milky was banned and he was replaced by another player in the candidates who I played against and won. Now at 4.5 I had confirmed a spot in the semifinals. @Pinni7 won all his remaining games as well and ended at 4.5 but with a better point difference than me so I placed second in my group.
You thought our group was interesting? Wait till you hear about the other one. The other group had @theunknownguyreborn, @Master-06, @Neverplayfastanti and @antichess_valentino. The unbeatable @Master-06 lost his first game in the candidates against @siddiq1911. @master-06 went on to win all his remaining games and secured his spot in the semis. @siddiq1911, @antichess_valentino and @theunknownguyreborn were fighting for the other place. Or so it seemed. Shortly after master’s victory over tugr he got banned as well. Everyone was given a win over @master-06 and this led to @theunknownguyreborn qualifying for the semis for he had won all of his remaining games. Then the decider was @siddiq1911 vs @antichess_valentino which val narrowly won (5.5-4.5) and placed first in his group.
The semis had me facing off against @antichess_valentino (yet again) and @pinni7 vs @theunknownguyreborn (2024 ACWC Finals matchup). Despite my earlier win against val in the group stage I knew that defeating him again would be no easy feat. Luckily for me I had a trick up my sleeves (Thanks to my secret weapon). I started the series off badly ... the score was 1-3 in his favour. But then I switched openings!! You see, everyone knew that the only opening I play was 1.c4 which was true up until then but I knew I had to diversify if I wanted to win this series and I pulled out 1.g3. This surprised my opponent and brought the odds back in my favour and I went on from losing 1-3 to winning 6-4. I turned out to be a natural with 1.g3 as the game I played was a perfect game. https://lichess.org/game/PX6CCpKw/black . In the other match @theunknownguyreborn took revenge for last year and beat @pinni7 to reach the finals.image.png
Another finals and stood in my way, a familiar face. Me vs @theunknownguyreborn facing off again. Our match was intense and we both blundered so much (insert kekwpain here). The second match itself was one which I blundered so bad ... first I blundered mate in 7 making it a drawn position then I find a brilliant rook promo only to blunder AGAIN and hand my opponent the win. ( https://lichess.org/game/tGEJoQdm/black#70 ). I was genuinely crashing out after this game. We traded blows and the score was 4-4 when tugr called his break. In the break I saw the games I just played and saw the number of blunders I made :(. After the break I went completely blind and just absolutely threw the game to make the score 5-4 in his favour. After this I pulled out 1.g3 again and won two games consecutively to make the score 5-6 in my favour (note the finals is best of 12 not 10). The last game much to tugr’s shock was over before it even started... He completely blundered in the opening (

https://lichess.org/game/Y7PyPHSt/black
) which gave me the last but certainly not the least world championship of 2025. image.png
With ACWC 2025 in the bag as well, I became the first player ever to win all three world championships in a single year ... completely dominating the whole year.

Two players I would like to highlight who were important throughout my world championships:

  1. @Theunknownguyreborn:
This is probably the player I respect most and despite how things ended I still do consider him better than me in the game. Keep in mind this was not the first ACWC final he made. He’s been in three CONSECUTIVE finals which he lost unfortunately but still goes to show how he’s been consistently been a top player throughout the years. He’s also given me tough competition in arenas and is also a fellow 100% zerker. And I believe it is not just me but everyone knows that even though he did not win any championship till now he has been the most deserving and definitely worthy of the title. I guess the only reason he hasn’t won a title is because no title was worthy of him :)
  2. My secret weapon:
Now the most important person to me who is the reason I won all these championships. The guy who used to spend time prepping for me because he knew that I could not. The one who helped me against everyone ensuring that I had a fighting chance and without whom I wouldn’t have qualified the semis for any tournament. The person in question is none other than @siddiq1911 who has been my constant support both literally and metaphorically throughout the whole year... always encouraging me on. I owe all my championships to him for he has always delivered whenever I needed him.
