About me

My name is Matyáš Marek, and I am an International Master from the Czech Republic. I have over 20 years of competitive chess experience and have been coaching chess for 6 years. I work with both children and adults from beginner level through advanced tournament play. Lessons are available in English and Czech.

Playing experience

I started playing chess at the age of 5 and earned the International Master title at 16. I represented the Czech Republic in numerous World and European Youth Championships. My best result was 6th place at the World Youth U18 Championship in 2015. I continue to play competitively and stay active in the chess community.

Teaching experience

I have been coaching chess for 6 years and have worked with students from several countries, including the Czech Republic and the United States. I teach players of all levels, from complete beginners to experienced tournament competitors. One of my students recently finished 9th in their category at the World Youth Chess Championship.

Other experiences

In addition to coaching, I have extensive experience analyzing high-level games, preparing opening repertoires, and helping students develop effective training habits. My academic background has also helped me develop a structured and analytical approach to teaching complex concepts.

Best skills

• Game analysis and identifying critical mistakes

• Positional understanding and strategic planning

• Tactical training and calculation

• Endgame technique

• Creating personalized training plans

• Explaining difficult concepts in a simple and practical way

Teaching methodology

My goal is to help students improve through a balanced approach that develops all aspects of chess. Lessons typically combine analysis of the student’s games, tactical exercises, positional training, and endgame study.

Rather than focusing only on memorization, I emphasize understanding the ideas behind moves and positions. For younger students, I keep lessons interactive and engaging while building strong fundamentals and confidence. Each lesson is adapted to the student’s age, level, goals, and learning style.
