I've been developing a chess variant system since 2005 (copyright registered 2023, patent pending) and wanted to share it here since this is exactly the kind of thing this section is for.
Most known variants (Chess960, Crazyhouse, Atomic, King of the Hill) change one rule or the starting position but keep the core goal — checkmate. This system changes the goal structure itself:
- Kings start in the opponent's camp, not at home
- Immunity — the king is protected as long as a designated piece (queen or a guardian knight) is alive; an immune king can't be checked, only blocked
- King's Shot — a separate, faster win condition: get your king home while the enemy's immune piece is still alive and the path is clear
- Portal — when the immune piece dies, you choose one of several pieces to respawn on the portal square
- Guardian Knight — an alternative immune piece: double-defense shield near your king, but reduced movement
- Shifting Board variant — after each move you can slide one of the middle rows 2 squares; adds a 4th win condition, Deport (push the enemy king off the board)
There's also a non-competitive branch, Espejo Yin-Yang (Mirror) — a no-capture puzzle where two sides swap positions using chess piece movement, closer to a sliding puzzle like Rush Hour than to actual chess.
Honest downside: the entry barrier is higher than Chess960. You already know how to play in Chess960 — here you have to relearn the actual objective, with several parallel win conditions and their priority. First real game takes 10-15 min to get into.
Both branches are in closed testing on Google Play (Android) right now. If you're into variant chess and want to try something that changes the goal, not just the board, reply here or DM me and I'll add you as a tester.
