Queen vs Rook Endgame.

ChessAnalysis boardEndgameStrategy
How to Win Q vs R.

Queen vs Rook endgames are famous as a relatively high-level endgame. It is an endgame that some Grandmasters have failed to win. On the surface it looks easy as you can bring your King closer and slowly push back the opponent. But it is tricky if your opponent brings their rook back to check you and also establishes a Third Rank Defense. The Queen vs Rook endgame occurs once in every 250 endgames according to Karsten Müller and Frank Lamprecht in their book Fundamental Chess Endings.

The endgame is difficult because breaking the opponent's defenses requires delicate manoeuvres. If the opponent always keeps their Rook close by their King then it will be a relatively easy win because you can slowly push them back. The best defense is to bring the Rook away from the King at the right time so that the King doesn't have to be tied down to defending the rook. The point is to do this without allowing the Queen to fork the King and Rook. This blog will give you the essential ideas for this endgame. This is a non-exhaustive list as there are many intricacies, but these are some useful ideas to know. Practice is required to get a feel for how to play this endgame as many Grandmasters have failed to win Queen vs Rook.

The Philidor Position

This is the classic winning position. It is a must know as it shows how to win when the King is stuck in the corner. It is a relatively simple manoeuvre.

The Third Rank Defense

The Third Rank defense is when the opponent places the Rook on the third rank to prevent the King from moving. If you can create the 'T' then you can break the defense easily.

The Ponziani Position

A rare idea to make a draw.

Ivanchuk vs Lautier

The position is like a Philidor with the King and Queen swapped around. The variations show how to convert this and also show some instructive stalemate themes.
